This year on World Oceans Day, 8 June 2016, we were blown away by the support we received from the ocean-loving online community in South African and further afield. Together with the National Sea Rescue Institute and Shark Spotters, we asked you to share your promise for a healthier sea on Twitter or Instagram and tag it #MyOceanPromise.

On Twitter, we trended in Cape Town … twice! That’s thanks to you.

Here are just a few of the highlights of World Oceans Day pledges.

148 067km // Barcelona // Spain We are loving the open spaces of the Barcelonian beachside, especially on #WorldOceansDay today. It's reminding us of our penguin encounter @2OceansAquarium in Cape Town, which we did earlier this year. Happy to report that we are yet to use plastic straws since our visit (as they end up in the oceans harming the scaley and furry ones) and we try explore the ocean fronts whenever we can. This post is dedicated to the penguins, seals, dolphins and fishies! ---------------------------------------------- Facebook /thisishowfarfromhome Snapchat How Far From Home Twitter @HowFarFromHome ---------------------------------------------- #howfarfromhome #myoceanpromise #facetnation #facet50 #visitbarcelona #visitspain

Every year on the 8th of June communities around the globe celebrate World Oceans Day as an opportunity to learn more about our ocean and take action to help conserve it. This year the celebration is bigger than ever with hundreds of family-friendly events at aquariums, zoos, museums, exciting online events, and strong prospects for a new youth movement to protect the ocean! World Ocean Day aims to raise awareness and promote responsible stewardship of the oceans. In so doing, the United Nations recognizes the many ways in which the oceans contribute to society, and the global need to address the challenges faced by the world’s oceans. The theme for this year is “Health Oceans, Health Planet” and individuals and organizations across the planet are taking action to raise awareness about plastic pollution and the inter-connectivity of our oceans with all life on earth. It is important to understand that certain activities, such as, farming, that may seem far removed from ocean issues, but in reality are impacted upon by what happens in the oceans. It is thus important that we are aware that: We all rely on healthy oceans with a rich diversity of life to provide our rainfall and many other essentials we require to survive, such as food and oxygen. Oceans through storms and flooding, present a risk that cannot be prevented but can be managed through better planning. Oceans provide endless opportunities recreation to be enjoyed by all of us. That we for these reasons we need to appreciate and conserve them Happy World Oceans Day! #worldoceansday #hpsamyoceanpromise #conservation #diversity #Marinelife #preventpollution #protectedareas #conserve #appreciate #freedive #SouthAfrica #freedivers @instagram_sa @2oceansaquarium #myoceanpromise @searescuesa @sharkspotters
