We’ve had Young Biologists (YBs) roaming the floors of the Two Oceans Aquarium since the year 2000. It is by far the most popular course offered through our Environmental Education Centre and our alumni will vouch for the fact that it is one of their most memorable experiences in Grade 10.

“The Young Biologist Course opens a thousand doors and minds every year. It changes ideas, lives and the future of the earth. It leaves every participant with new friends, standards, confidence and quite a significant amount of knowledge. ” – Emlyn Allwright – March 2013 Young Biologist

“It was an important learning curve that offered new knowledge, fun and exposure. ” – Jessie Leverzencie – September 2013 Young Biologist

Due to the overwhelming success of the course, in 2012 we started offering two courses per year. This is still the case and the first one is coming up in the March/April holidays.

The YB course is first and foremost a volunteer training course for Grade 10 students, with the aim of letting a new bunch of enthusiastic and energetic youngsters loose on the floor to educate our visitors from all over the world.

The week is primarily spent at the Two Oceans Aquarium, learning many new things about the animals and plants found along our coastline, ending with a super-fun camp in Soetwater (near Kommetjie) over the weekend. This is where the real fun begins, with snorkelling, rocky shoring and hiking on the cards.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of I&J, the course is free. Applicants are chosen based on the motivational letters that they submit.

For application details and forms, please contact Katja on education@aquarium.co.za or call 021 814 4555 for any queries. Applications close 1 March 2016 for the March/April intake.
