Young Biologist Green Team beach clean-up on 2 August 2014

On Saturday our Young Biologist Green Team took to the beach to fill 12 large bags with rubbish they collected along the Muizenberg shoreline. The Young Biologists are doing their bit to help conserve, preserve and help teach others how to look after our planet.

They aim to collect 25 000 bags of rubbish over the next year. Saturday was the first of many clean-up they have committed to. Almost 100 people turned up to pick up rubbish at Surfer’s Corner.

Thaakirah Samaai, a Young Biologist, says they collected 12 big bags of rubbish. Most of the litter was tiny bits and pieces, but included a huge number of cigarette butts, straws, plastic wrappers and micro plastic pieces. A fluorescent bulb, which is classified as hazardous waste, was also picked up.

We encourage everyone to be diligent. Do not litter, and if you happen to be walking or running alongside rubbish, kindly pick it up and toss it in the nearest dirt bin.
