What an incredible year we've had! From successful rescues of precious animals washed up on our doorstep and penguin ambassadors able to help Cape Town through the water crisis, to celebrating the underwater world through inspiring speaker evenings, primetime TV shows and rock concerts - here are some Two Oceans Aquarium highlights that will make 2018 a year to remember.

We were TV stars!

They say you aren't really famous until you're "TV famous". MNet's The Wild Ones did an amazing job of capturing the essence of the passionate people that bring the Aquarium to life every day, the animals that give Cape Town's most unique experience its flair, and the weird and wacky moments that take place behind the scenes.

Be sure to catch all our favourite TV moments, highlights from the show and tons of extra content about each episode.

Our turtles became world famous

2018 has been an eventful year for the Two Oceans Aquarium's sea turtle rescue, rehabilitation and release programme. From tracking the year-long migration of giant Yoshi, to jointly releasing Durban's favourite turtle, Pemba, with uShaka Sea World, we've been busy!

Alvi is a green sea turtle who was saved through incredible teamwork - and has taken the world by storm as a video of a plastic bag being pulled out of its throat has gone viral. Alvi is now recovering, but this lesson about global plastic pollution continues to spread.
Phiko the tiny loggerhead hatchling who could not be released last year due to nerve issues has made an incredible recovery - thanks, in part, to the contributions of his new benefactor, John Dory's.
The world has been watching the progress of Yoshi the turtle since her release last December. Thanks to a satellite tag, we've been able to follow Yoshi's journey up the African west coast and back, and are able to keep providing updates on her progress.

Read more about Yoshi's release.

We rocked out underwater

For the first time ever, the Two Oceans Aquarium was transformed into Cape Town's hottest winter music destination. In partnership with Texx and the City, three stunning concerts formed out After Dark series - featuring some of South Africa's most incredible musical talent: Majozi, aKING, Grassy Spark, Southern Wild, Bam Bam Brown and Gemma Griffiths.

Check out the evening featuring Bam Bam Brown and aKING.

Take a look at how Grassy Spark and Southern Wild rocked out at the Aquarium.

Amazing sunfish rescues

Ocean sunfish are one of the ocean's treasures - weird, but wonderful. Every summer, Cape Town sees these animals in abundance, and we are blessed to be able to help those that find themselves in harm's way. We are also blessed to be able to educate the public about these ocean oddities.

Holy Moly, named for the hole in its bottom lip, was a large sunfish rescued and nursed back to health in December last year. This January we were able to set Holy Moly free again, in the deep waters beyond Robben Island.

Just as we were about to start celebrating the festive season, two ocean sunfish became trapped in the nearby marina. Our team was able to rescue them both - one has since been released in deeper waters, the other remains in the Predator Exhibit under our care.

Education team blew young minds

Through incredible efforts on the part of our environmental education team members, thousands of South African learners are able to gain first-hand lessons of appreciation and respect for the ocean through our outreach programmes, school classroom lessons and the amazing free courses offered by our Marine Sciences Academy. Making all this possible are the wonderful partners who support the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation. Thank you!

A huge thank you to long-time partner I&J, who have supported our Young Biologist, grade 11 and 12 Oceanography and Junior Biologist Courses, as well as offering lots of additional support to our environmental education mission.
A massive thank-you to De Beers Marine for making one of our flagship Young Biologist courses possible and supporting another generation of marine scientists.
Thank you to the American International School of Cape Town for supporting the Marine Science Discoverers course.

And to end with some real icing on the cake (and a cherry on top), the team's draft Marine Science Curriculum for South African high schools has been completed and the pilot programme for this potential new school subject will be taught in several Cape Town schools next year.

Penguins inspire Cape Town

During Cape Town's water crisis, the Aquarium's penguins banded together to teach us all a valuable lesson: When food is scarce, a penguin swims farther, it swims harder and it keeps doing its best until it finds food or dies trying. Just like penguins, we needed to work together to save our city from disaster (and we did it!).

Cape Town's most "scientific" cleanup

2018 saw the first of our Trash Bash beach cleanups. In partnership with The Beach Co-op, Trash Bash aims at not only cleaning up a selected beach, but also to gather scientific data that could be used to track the buildup of plastic pollution on our coast.

With the support of hundreds of Capetonians, four successful Trash Bashes took place on Sunset Beach, with tens of thousands of plastic litter items being removed.

Trash Bash will return in 2019, with a new beach deserving of attention!

Amazing events

One of the best-kept secrets of the Two Oceans Aquarium is that we become an exclusive events venue after dark - with in-house catering and décor teams for any occasion. But, our favourite events are certainly those that we put together ourselves. Take a look:

We also hosted some pretty epic private events. And some REALLY epic ones.

Seal team

Not all of our work takes place inside the Aquarium - we have a committed team that takes our mission to the V&A Waterfront harbour in Cape Town and constantly monitors the seal population to help those entangled in plastic litter, or otherwise distressed. With the addition of a new seal rest platform and the allocation of additional resources to patrolling the harbour our seal team has accomplished much and we are proud has been achieved.

New animals, exhibits and even more...

Baby Chippy-Goodwill joined our rockhopper penguin family and our I&J Ocean Exhibit family was joined by "honey" the honeycomb stingray.

The Ocean Experience was introduced, and our very own Nicholas was one of the first to try it. And on the topic of unique animal experiences - we finally reintroduced scuba diving with our ragged-tooth sharks

We revealed the "turtle wall", a new, interactive way for families to learn about sea turtles, their migrations and the threats they face in the wild. More recently, we added a journey through the discovery of the world's most famous living fossil 80 years ago - the coelacanth.

Some adorable parrotfish joined the Aquarium - fish that literally poop out beaches. And let's not forget - some little weirdos joined the family too!
