Here’s a look back at our Festive Celebrations Family Sleepover for members, which took place this month.

The Aquarium elves were on hand to welcome everyone.

Members enjoyed festive drinks, chocolates and cookies while the kids had their faces painted.

Mdanzanza Animal Clinic was on hand to share information about their valuable work and to sell their calendars, toys and cards in order to raise much-needed funds for their life-saving work at their clinic in Khayelitsha.

Being a member and attending a sleepover means you have the entire Aquarium to wander around in, after closing time, at your leisure. And our members took advantage of this benefit! On this evening, members were mesmerised by the shoals of fish in the I&J Ocean Exhibit while enjoying their picnic supper.

The kids then went down to the AfriSam Children’s Play Centre to decorate their festive-season stocking, and they had a super time. We know that many of the parents enjoyed helping with the crafts, too.

Soon it was time for the special guest to arrive… To (almost) everyone’s surprise, Scuba Claus and his diving elf appeared in the I&J Ocean Exhibit!

Scuba Claus did some other underwater acrobatics, much to the delight of the children.

And then of course, we had our very special Santa Claus visit to hand out presents to all the children. All the parents also received gifts from Santa.

Members then enjoyed yummy popcorn and hot chocolate while watching Finding Dory on the big screen TV.

Bedtime at the Aquarium means a fun camp-out experience in front of the I&J Ocean Exhibit and in the Diversity Hall. Children were so excited that they vowed not to fall asleep but soon dreamland called… only to be awoken the following morning with a delicious "breakfast in a box: waiting for them.

A huge thank you to I&J, who sponsored back-to-school backpacks for all the kids, filled with a lunchbox, a stationery set, notepad and a peak cap.
