We can all agree on one thing - saving lives is important! Shark Spotters need to raise R60 000 to buy new binoculars to equip their spotters with the tools needed to keep our beaches safe, for both humans and sharks.
Shark Spotters is an incredible organisation that plays a vital role in ensuring the safety of humans and sharks alike. By taking direct action and implementing their own innovations, they are making a massive difference. Please help Shark Spotters with this request (adapted from its BackaBuddy campaign):
Who are Shark Spotters:
Shark Spotters is a non-profit organisation that improves beach safety by applying innovative and responsible shark safety solutions to reduce the spatial overlap between people and sharks, thereby reducing the risk of a shark bite.
Its trained observers, called spotters, are strategically located at elevated positions above high-risk shark beaches provide an early warning system for water users of the presence of great white sharks.
Binoculars are vital to Shark Spotters work:
Binoculars are an essential tool for the spotters to ensure that they can keep water users safe. They allow the spotters to zoom in on movements in the water, confirm the species of animal, and accurately assess any potential dangers.
The spotters are currently using old binoculars with low magnification and which are in a state of disrepair. They need to be replaced urgently.
Shark Spotters need 35 pairs of new high powered binoculars to ensure that they have the best tools for the job!
They have tested several products and have determined that Bushnell H20 10x42mm binoculars offer the best balance of optics and price. ORMS has generously offered Shark Spotters a huge discount on these - this means that Shark Spotters needs to raise R60 000 to buy all 35 pairs.
The Two Oceans Aquarium appeals to you to show your support to Shark Spotters and make a donation to this cause (even if this is a small one). Let's work together to help keep the waters of the Cape safe for beach-goers and sharks alike!
