How would you like to get up close and personal with the adorable penguins of the Two Oceans Aquarium? Does the thought of personally meeting our too-cute rockhopper penguins, Roxy, Hopper and Bubbles, put a spring in your step?

Then we’ve got some very exciting news for you!

On 2 October, which just so happens to be National African Penguin Day, the Aquarium is launching an awesome interactive event, called Penguin Encounters.

On a Penguin Encounter, two people will join our bird trainer, Hayley McLellan, for an informative, fun and exhilarating face-to-face encounter with our feathered friends. You will be invited to connect with these wonderful water birds in the company of a true expert.

To celebrate the kick-off of this new offering, we are running a special competition – only for our Twitter followers.

The contest is very simple:

Step one: Follow us on Twitter here: @2OceansAquarium.

Step two: Tell us in 120 characters or less, by replying to @2OceansAquarium on Twitter, why penguins rock, and add #penguinencounter to your tweet – that way we can track your entries.

If you’ve followed these steps, your name will go into a random lucky draw.

On 2 October, we will draw the name of one of our entrants. The winner will be one of the first to experience the exciting Penguin Encounter at the Aquarium!

Of course, terms and conditions apply – sadly, we can only give this prize to a Twitter follower who lives in Cape Town, or to a fan who will be in Cape Town between October and December 2010.

The Penguin Encounter will be suitable for anyone (although we’d discourage kids under eight from taking part). It will cost R350 for an encounter that’ll last about 30 minutes – although the entire process from welcoming and saying goodbye will last up to 90 minutes. R100 of that R350 will be donated to an Aquarium penguin fund, which will be put towards a charitable cause at the end of the year.

To start with, from 2 October, we’ll run the Penguin Encounters only on Saturdays. Bookings will be made exclusively through the Aquarium’s website. For now, follow us on Twitter and be the first to know when tickets go on sale!
