CNN’s Road to Durban: A Green City Journey is an inspiring 30-minute show that looks into “cities that are making strides in reducing their carbon footprint”. This is in the lead-up to 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, happening in Durban next month. CNN journalist Ayesha Durgahee visited Cape Town and, naturally, the Two Oceans Aquarium.
The Two Oceans Aquarium is among the leading tourist attractions in the city when it comes to environmentally sustainable business practices. CNN has posted an awesome video about the Aquarium and our efforts in responsible tourism – check out the stars of the insert, our rockhopper penguins!
In the video, Mike Lucas, a leading marine biologist from the University of Cape Town, talks about rising temperatures around sub-Antarctic islands. He says that the two-to-three degree temperature increase “is enough to change the whole structure of the food chain”.

You’ll also see Two Oceans Aquarium Technical Manager Mike de Maine talk about our recent renewable energy upgrades, which have been implemented in partnership with Project 90 by 2030. Mike tells CNN: “Without us keeping the marine environment stable and healthy, we’re in serious trouble.” He also gives some interesting insight into our new wind turbine, which is quieter and bird-friendly.
Illustrating the complexity of climate change and its associated dangers, Ayesha also talks about the absorption of carbon dioxide by the oceans, and the resultant change in the oceans’ pH levels – read more ocean acidification here.
In October this year, the Aquarium was awarded Platinum status by the Heritage Environmental Management Company in recognition of our committed green policy.
