Maria Cupido is the head of the Two Oceans Aquarium SEA Team.

The Two Oceans Aquarium Student Environmental Action (SEA) Team is excited and honoured to announce the first beach cleanup of 2017, happening on 21 January 2017 from 10am till 12am.

Three locations have been chosen for this cleanup: a wetland, a beach and land. The reason for these locations is the fact that litter is not stationary and it infiltrates every environment. We want to ensure that each eco-system is able to function efficiently and that marine biomes are able to thrive without threat from our waste.

The SEA Team calls on you as a community to not only get involved on 21 January but to encourage others to do the same. This is our home and it is our duty to look after our home, to ensure a sustainable life for all.

On 21 January, you can decide which part of the cleanup you want to attend. Just meet up with one of our volunteers! If you wish to do the wetland cleanup, meet at Zandvlei in Muizenburg at 10am. The beach and land cleanup meeting spot will be at Surfer’s Corner in Muizenburg. There will be volunteers at each venue to advise you and brief you about the event to ensure that you are fully aware of what to do, and to give you a litter bag and gloves. All you need to bring is sunblock, a hat and water (in a reusable bottle).

We have some amazing prizes for participants: Aquarium tickets, a Penguin Encounter at the Aquarium and an Aquarium membership, as well as a WAWA wooden handslide and a WeWood wooden watch (worth more than R1 500). After the cleanup there will be complimentary surf lessons for participants in exchange for the bag of litter collected. These surf lessons have been sponsored by Surf Emporium, Xpression on The Beach and SURF Life. If you wish to participate in a surf lesson, sign up during registration.

Rolling Wood will be sponsoring free coffee for the first 30 people to register.

This event is set to be fin-tastic! Let’s rally together as a community and look after this beautiful planet we have been given, to ensure we are able to continue to enjoy and marvel at its beauty.
