There’s a new way to reduce your impact on the planet – take the #PlasticDetox challenge this October! Choose to become a "Responsible Rebel", a "Strategic Sipper" or a "Zen Master" by committing to cut out certain single-use plastic items.
#PlasticDetox has been developed by Plant the Seed, a social enterprise based in Cape Town. Campaign Director and Co-founding Director Mattieu Theron says that Plant the Seed are "advocates of reductionism. We are advocates of finding ways to reduce our impact on the world around us by changing simple lifestyle actions be they around food, waste or people. #PlasticDetox is an awesome way to begin dissolving old habits around single-use plastic consumption and solidifying new habits which help us tread lighter on this earth.”
In response to the global plastic challenge, Plant the Seed have launched a behaviour change campaign #PlasticDetox. Over and above creating educational awareness around the impacts that single-use plastics have on our oceans, soil, water, food and our health, #PlasticDetox is a campaign for individuals and businesses to challenge their consumption habits of single-use plastics for the month of October. The campaign provides a platform for individuals and businesses to actively participate in the global turning of tide away from single-use plastics and help achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Why now?
Our consumption and disposal habits of single-use plastic has resulted in one of the world's biggest environmental and looming social and economic challenges. We live in an interconnected world, and unfortunately the marvels of single-use plastic, and our consumption and use of it have resulted in severe unintended consequences: unprecedented river and ocean pollution, exponential sea life death, coral reef destruction, soil poisoning, biodiversity loss, oxygen starved ocean dead-zones, food chain contamination and increasing health pandemics. The evidence is out, we need to change our relationship with single-use plastic. No excuse for single-use.
