Two intricately patterned new triggerfish fish recently arrived in the Two Oceans Aquarium Skretting Diversity Gallery - but only one of them can earn the title of "most beautiful fish pattern." Who will it be?

Meet the contenders: The vivid clown triggerfish and the abstract Picasso triggerfish.

Contender 1: Clown triggerfish

The clown triggerfish (Balistoides conspicillum) comes in with some brightly coloured fish-fashion. Those brightly coloured clown lips just say "kiss me", but don't be fooled - the clown trigger's cute exterior hides a powerful set of teeth which it uses to bite the spines off of sea urchins.

Contender 2: Picasso triggerfish

The Picasso triggerfish (Rhinecanthus aculeatus) must truly have one of the most remarkable patterns in nature to be named after such a prestigious artist. It is a fish with an adorable softer side, lying on its side to sleep at night. But, don't be fooled - it will even try to fight a scuba diver to protect its babies.

The Hawaiian name for the Picasso triggerfish is humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa, which means "pig-snouted triggerfish". We can't see the resemblance! Credit: Devon Bowen/Two Oceans Aquarium.
