Today is World Penguin Day 2014

Stuart Buchanan

It’s World Penguin Day – and not that we ever need an excuse to talk about these incredible, fascinating and important creatures, but since they are being spoken about around the world, we thought we’d remind you about why penguins rock.

You can read about our resident African penguins here, and our rockhopper penguins here – or you can grab the popcorn and watch them in action in a series of short videos below:

There are a number of different species around the world – read more about them all in this blog by Katja, from our Environmental Education Centre.

Here’s another fun, educational video produced by TED-Ed, called Penguins: Popularity, peril and poop, which we highly recommend.

And lastly, if you want to understand about the importance of conserving these animals, read journalist John Yeld’s article about why researching and raising awareness of their plight is so important.

Our doors will be open every day of the long weekend for you to come see the penguins for yourself – whether they are chilling on the beach at the River Meander Exhibit, swimming around outside the AfriSam Children’s Play Centre, or whether you choose to join us for a feed, or a close encounter – your interest in, and support for, penguins is much appreciated.

Buy your tickets online now and save 10% (you can also add a donation to our conservation efforts when you purchase online).

Happy World Penguin Day!
