The Two Oceans Aquarium’s Environmental Education Centre will be working with Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition to bring a unique experience to schoolchildren this summer. Our Titanic Special is available to groups of 10 or more children and is valid from 27 November to 9 December 2015, and again from 14 January to 12 February 2016. The rate per child is R80.

Authentic artifacts recovered from the famous shipwreck of the Titanic will be displayed for the first time in South Africa when Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition opens in the V&A Waterfront from 27 November 2015 to 14 February 2016. Educational, emotional and appropriate for all ages, Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition will take visitors on a journey through the life of the Titanic.

The exhibition has been designed with a focus on the legendary ship’s compelling human stories. Those attending will find out about the lives of South Africans that were on board the Titanic, learn about passengers and crew members, admire a recreated iceberg installed at the exhibition and relive the events of that fatal night. The Titanic Special not only includes a visit to the Titanic exhibition, but also an educational visit to the Two Oceans Aquarium in one of our Discovery Centres, where school groups will be the first to experience our brand new lesson - Shipwreck Ecosystems.

Apart from the obvious archaeological interest of shipwrecks, all of them become artificial reefs, providing a host of surfaces and hiding places for animals to live on and in. Within a few months, the wreckage becomes covered with encrusting animals (and plants if there is light available), followed by larger animals which feed on them. Soon a vibrant self-sustaining ecosystem and complicated food web is established, providing explorers with a huge range of interesting things to study and photograph.

Most scuba divers visit wrecks to see the animals that have come to live there, rather than the wreck itself. There are many wrecks around the Cape Peninsula that are popular dive sites.

Come and visit our Discovery Centres to learn more about these wrecks and some animals we can expect to see.
