Katja Rockstroh is the PA to the head of education at the Aquarium’s Environmental Education Centre. She started working at the Aquarium as a casual in December 2007, mainly at the microscope and touch pool. She’s been on the Environmental Education Centre team since March 2010. Katja offers administrative support to the Environmental Education Centre and some of her portfolios include organising educational sleepovers and the volunteer course.
The holidays are upon us again! Soon the roads will empty and school children nationwide will have nothing to do besides eat ice cream and relax at the pool.
Right? Wrong!
The Environmental Education Centre at the Two Oceans Aquarium has just the solution for the boredom and inactivity that threatens to follow the breakup day bell.
During the extra-long winter holidays, we offered our Junior Biologist Winter Programme to 11 to 13 year olds and it turned out to be a big hit!
A total of 71 youngsters joined us for three days of fun, filled with informative activities relating to fish, sea birds, pollution and marine invertebrates.
The whole Aquarium becomes an interactive classroom for this programme, giving children an opportunity to see all the exhibits open to the public, as well as behind the scenes into the workings of a large-scale aquarium.
Our teacher, Khonzani Lembeni, is experienced in holding workshops for primary school children and enjoys sharing his knowledge with future marine enthusiasts.
Besides having heaps of fun, Junior Biologists meet plenty of new friends and learn weird and wondrous things about our coastline and its inhabitants.
Parents, what better way to keep your Grade 5 to 7 children busy than to have them spend three fun days at the Aquarium under the supervision of our staff?
