Staff changes at the Aquarium

Renee Leeuwner

We’ve had quite a few staff changes at the Aquarium of late and we thought you might like to hear more about who is who and what they are up to.

Welcome:

We would like to welcome Mmameli Mpukumpa. Mmameli has been part of the family for a while as he has been helping out on a casual basis in our feed room. Mmameli now joins us as a permanent staff member. He is the Feed Room Supervisor and is in charge of the daily food preparation for the animals in the Aquarium.

Congratulations:

We would like to congratulate Ruth Wright on her promotion to Senior Aquarist.  You might remember Ruth from this blog. Ruth has been with the Aquarium for approximately five years and continues to grow in her creativity and initiative when it comes to exhibits. You go Ruth!

Next on our list is Bamanye Mpetsheni. Bamanye has handed the feed room reigns over to Mmameli and has been appointed as Aquarist 1. Bamanye will be looking after areas in both the Indian Ocean Gallery and the Atlantic Ocean Gallery. We can’t wait to see Bamanye’s take on the exhibits in his care.

Then we say “Good-bye” and “Welcome” to Andrea Hindley. Until recently Andrea was a Senior Aquarist with immense knowledge of animal husbandry. She leaves the Curatorial Department to join the Technical Department as the Assistant Technical Manager. So, not only does she have husbandry knowledge, she will also now gain technical knowledge, particularly with regard to life support systems. Combined, these two make for a cracker-jack aquarium staff member.

It’s always rewarding to see staff grow from strength to strength and being willing to take on new challenges. As can be seen from some of our recent blogs there is always something new to learn in the Aquarium.
