Earth Hour 2011 was reportedly the most successful to date, with a record 134 countries around the world taking part, according to a blog post on Don’t Be a Passenger.

South Africans also played a vital role when they powered down all non-essential lights and appliances on Saturday, 26 March. According to Engineering News, Eskom reported that we saved a total of 350MW – enough electricity to power Bloemfontein for an entire day.

The Aquarium backed Earth Hour by powering down the website for an hour, and internet users trying to access the site during that time were met with only a black screen and short message of support for the initiative.

In a statement released to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Archbishop Desmond Tutu said: “Climate change is the greatest human-induced crisis facing our world today. It is totally indiscriminate of race, culture, class, nationality or religious belief. It affects every living organism on the planet – including all of us.”

What did you do for Earth Hour, and do you think this is a worthwhile initiative in the long-term?
