This sargassum fish is the latest star to join the Aquarium. Fitting, as its scientific name, Histrio histrio means ‘the actor’. Stefan Hurter, our paparazzi at the Two Oceans Aquarium, had no trouble getting this star to pose for the cameras.
Since its debut appearance at the Two Oceans Aquarium, “Big Mouth” (as its been called in the press), was nominated for the Seriously Weird prize but unfortunately lost out to “Slimeball”, the hagfish. But Big Mouth is undeterred, reminding visitors that it’s quite a unique specimen. You wouldn’t tell by looking at him, but the sargassum fish is actually a frogfish of the family Antennariidae, the only species in its genus.
To find out more see its performance at the Two Oceans Aquarium and be sure to get an “autograph”.
