But Marine Dynamics is more than just a cage-diving operator. It is known for its wide-ranging conservation efforts, working closely with the Dyer Island Conservation Trust. Apart from conducting continuous research on shark ecology, environmental changes and many other factors of marine conservation, Marine Dynamics is directly addressing a variety of conservation problems. That’s why we couldn’t be happier to team up with them for this incredible double dive special.

The problems caused by discarded fishing lines are of particular concern, and the Fishing Line Recovery and Recycling Program aims to reduce this environmental damage. Anglers frequently dispose of their fishing lines in the water, and this can cause significant harm to fish, penguins and seals, which become entangled in the lines, or sometimes even swallow them.

The plight of the African penguin is the focus of Marine Dynamics’ efforts to help restore the penguins’ breeding conditions. The campaign is called Faces of Need. Two Oceans Aquarium is only too aware of the cause, with our own African penguin celebrities Zuki and Ayoba firm favourites with visitors. The aquarium is also involved in the Waddle for Penguins campaign.

Of course, the biggest drive for conservation usually centres around recycling, and the Drum It Up project encourages recycling of all plastic, paper, glass, metal and organic waste products. It is aimed at schoolchildren, and provides large drums for each kind of waste. Each drum has a different marine animal on it. The Aquarium has been trying to do its bit, too, and recently banned plastic bags.

Marine Dynamics has an extensive volunteer and internship programme, allowing people who care about the kinds of conservation issues mentioned above to spend time with the incredible marine life off the coast of the Western Cape. You can learn more about volunteering in the video below:
