For one of our first projects, the Two Oceans Aquarium SEA Team ran a photography/videography competition for children from grades 4 to 12. We had some impressive entries and it was tough to choose our winners!

Applicants were asked to portray the environment as they see it. The SEA Team chose the winners, with much discussion and debate.

Below, the winners for the grade 8-12 photography category.

3rd place

Name: Gregory Haralambous
Age: 18 years
School: Wynberg Boys High School

Kalk Bay Harbour seal at sunset

“This photo was taken to portray the emotion and feeling behind animals. I feel that those who describe animals as not having any thoughts or feelings come closer to that description than the animal they are trying to describe. ” – Gregory Haralambous

You can find Gregory on Facebook and Instagram.

Prize: Kayak trip for two with Kaskazi Kayaks.

2nd place

Name: Sarah Kinloch
Age: 17 years
School: Curro Durbanville

Mauritius

“This is an aerial photo of Mauritius, which was taken from inside an aeroplane. In this picture we can see the beautiful oceans reef, sandy shores and the green vegetation of the island, whilst being covered by overcast clouds. This picture represents the beauty of nature and life as we know it from a different perspective which dwarfs human kind.” – Sarah Kinloch

Prize: Two Oceans Aquarium membership

We struggled to choose a clear winner for the top prize, as there were two very different entries that both, on the one hand, showed great photographic skills, and on the other, portrayed a greater understanding of what the environment should mean to us and its impact on a social level.

Joint 1st place

Name: Lukas Stander
Age: 16 years
School: Paul Roos Gymnasium

Lion's Head

“On my sixteenth birthday it was my wish to climb Lion’s Head during sunrise to take photographs from the top of the mountain, so I was lucky to capture this image of Cape Town bathed in early morning fog.” – Lukas Stander

You can find Lukas on Facebook or Instagram.
