Called Water Quarter, the campaign will focus on fresh water, and has created stimulating water conservation lessons for learners in Grades 4 to 12. The lessons will teach schoolchildren about the importance of saving water.
“We will look at topics such as how much water a dripping tap actually wastes, what water restrictions are all about and what we can do to save water,” says Katja Rockstroh from the Environmental Educational Centre.
“We will produce water-specific resource packs for teachers who book a water conservation lesson at the Aquarium during February and March. The packs will include factsheets, books and a CD with information. Any school that visits us on World Wetlands Day or during National Water Week will receive a resource pack regardless of whether they’ve booked our water conservation lesson.”
During Water Quarter, teachers in the Environmental Educational Centre discovery centres – where hands-on, interactive learning happens – will talk about freshwater bodies in South Africa, the problems with these water bodies and why we have a water shortage.
If your school would like an activity with a different topic, the Environmental Educational Centre is happy to tailor-make activities to suit your needs.
