Save Our Frogs competition winners announced!

The winners of our frog competition have been announced, and will soon be hopping with delight at their prize.

Yasmina Steyn and Lesley Downey have each won a Frogs: Beyond The Pond activity book, and a frog identification book. Well done, and happy frog spotting!

The competition was run in conjunction with Save Our Frogs Day, an initiative started by the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT).

Frogs are some of the most threatened species on the planet, and South Africa is no exception.

“These water-loving amphibians are extremely important to our ecosystems as they provide food to a wide array of other animals and consume vast quantities of insects,” said Dr. Jeanne Tarrant, Manager of EWT’s Threatened Amphibian Programme.

“They are also important bio-indicators due to their sensitive skins and biphasic lifestyle. Habitat destruction, increasing levels of pollution in freshwater systems, disease and changes in climate, are starting to have noticeable effects on amphibian communities globally.

“Despite their crucial role, amphibians are currently the most threatened class of vertebrate animal on Earth, with 32% of all species listed as threatened – compared with 12% of birds and 23% of mammals.”

“In South Africa, 29% of our frog species are listed as critically endangered, endangered or vulnerable. The fact that one third of all amphibians are Red Listed should be an important warning to humans that our global environment is in jeopardy and that urgent conservation action is crucial.”

The aim of Save Our Frogs Day is to raise awareness about the global amphibian crisis, and the importance of wetlands in sustaining critical amphibian populations…as well as the have some fun in the name of frogs!

The Two Oceans Aquarium supported this year’s Save Our Frogs Day by having a froggy themed puppet show and arts and crafts day at the AfriSam Play Centre, as well as handing out free Frogs: Beyond The Pond activity books to all children on the day.

The western leopard toad and arum lily frog are on display at the Frogs: Beyond The Pond exhibit for all to enjoy.
