We always have a lot of fun with the high schoolers who join us for our Young Biologist (YB) courses – it’s great to see young people enthusiastic about marine science and conservation.
Our latest course, sponsored by De Beers Marine, was held last month – check out the photos here to see what we got up to.
We also had to share this excellent poem, written by Kaamilah Cornelius during our Kleinmond camp and performed live by a group of YBs!. Check it out:
Young Biologist Conservation Poem
Hi everybody, can I get your attention
I have a few things that I really need to mention
Some important information
Think of this as an invitation
You are all invited to help us in conservation
Of the animals and the plants that you find in the sea
If you don’t do something about it, it will affect you and me
So please listen carefully
To the three animals on my right
They will be telling us about their everyday sea life.
Penguin
Hi, I’m an African Penguin, my name is Claire
I’m found in South Africa, so you’ll find me there
But here’s the thing, my life’s a mess
I’m put under so much stress
I can’t swim around like back in the day
And I have lost so much of my family
Scary, they take all of our fish
The ships come around and pollute the sea
No one seems to care about me.
Seal
Hi I’m Babalwa. I’m a seal
I would like to tell you a little about how I feel
You see this plastic around my head?
It should be in the bin but it escaped
It hurts so much, it cuts a lot of my skin away
The humans don’t care, they’re the reason it’s in my hair
This plastic could kill me and that’s my biggest fear
Seahorse
Hi my name is Daniel, and I’m a seahorse
Lots of my friends were dried by force
The thing is I’m very handsome, everyone wants me in their home
But if this keeps going on, soon I’ll be all alone
I wish someone could help us. Hey, what about you?
You guys seem like you’re looking for something important to do.
I’d like to thank the penguin, seahorse and the seal
It’s so nice to know how they all really feel
And if it makes me think about all the things I do wrong
I don’t realise that it causes so much harm
I mean, imagine if our children won’t be able to see a seal
We need to act now, yes, things just got real
So let’s do things homies, and give it all we’ve got
And to those people who litter ... Urrghh, can you not!
