Real sharks pick Western Province!

Helen Lockhart

A short while ago, Paul Snodgrass from Cape Town radio station Heart 104.9FM contacted the Aquarium with an interesting proposal – to put “WP sharks” to the test to see which team they would choose as the winners of the Currie Cup final to be played in Durban on 30 October.

See the photos: Proof – Real sharks pick Western Province!

The “WP sharks” in question, in case you were wondering, are the ragged-tooth sharks in our I&J Predator Exhibit.

On Sunday, 24 October, two Aquarium divers, appropriately kitted out in Western Province (WP) and Sharks jerseys respectively, took to the waters of the I&J Predator Exhibit with identical lunch boxes.

The winning team would be decided by the number of hake pieces taken by the sharks from either the WP or the Sharks diver.

While each of the divers had the same delicious hake pieces from I&J in their lunch boxes, the sharks decided that one diver had by far the tastiest treats on offer and took five pieces from him, as opposed to only one piece from the other diver.

Paul, our divers and the sharks kept mum on the outcome until this afternoon. Paul got into the I&J Predator Exhibit and, watched by Aquarium visitors as well as several members of the WP team, revealed that the ragged-tooth sharks had chosen … WP as the winners of the big game on Saturday!

We’ll be the first to admit that our blood is blue. Go Province and make us proud!

If the raggies turn out to be right, we might have an ocean of oracles on our hands …
