Two Oceans Aquarium members recently attended the Turtally Awesome Family Sleepover. They brought their picnics and sleeping bags and camped out in front of the I&J Ocean Exhibit.

Simon Leigh, an Aquarium aquarist who spends most of his time in the I&J Ocean Exhibit, dived in the display and spoke to members from inside the exhibit, telling them more about our resident turtles, Bob and Yoshi. The kids loved watching him tickle and scratch the turtles’ shells and, of course, guess what many of the kids want to become when they grow up?

Two Oceans Aquarium Curator Maryke Musson chatted with members about our turtle rescue and rehabilitation programme. She also explained what to do when finding stranded turtles on the beach. The highlight was when she brought a one-year-old loggerhead turtle for everyone to see, and the kids were able to gently stroke its back. Turtally awesome!

The kids made clay turtles during their arts 'n crafts session and then gathered around with hot chocolate, marshmallows and popcorn to watch Finding Dory. Breakfast in bed was served to everyone the next morning before saying goodbye to the fish.

Here is what some of the members had to say about the event:

“Thank you for a super-fun evening on Saturday night! It took us until yesterday to catch up on sleep but it was such fun. It was useful with a three-year-old to know the movie in advance - we pre-watched it so Emily wasn't too frightened of the scary parts. The marshmallows just make hot chocolate so much better. As with everything Aquarium, you guys did a brilliant job, thank you! ” – Rosemary and Emily

“A huge thank you to you and your colleagues! The event, including the entertainment and catering, ran like clockwork. Someone clearly took a lot of trouble to plan everything. Adults and children had an awesome evening, and woke up to the rays of the sun shining through the water on turtles and fish, and to a great breakfast. The staff members were so friendly, helpful and enthusiastic. You have a wonderful team.” – Louis

“We had such a fantastic time ... many thanks! When do the next batch of tickets go on sale? We would like to ensure that we do not miss out! ” – Michelle Mclaren

“What a fantastic evening! My kids loved it, we slept in the tunnel and it was so special. Your staff did a very good job with everything. ” – Miriam Bracht

“To you and your team, thanks for a very fun evening. It was so well organised and we really enjoyed it so much! ” – Jo-Anne Thomson

“Love love love the experience! Everything was so well organised. Enjoyed being able to be in the Aquarium in the evening and fall asleep while watching the fish overhead. ” – Chaim and Lani Ehrlich

“We just wanted to say thanks so much for the sleepover. It was absolutely awesome! I can’t stop raving about it! I look forward to partake in all the other member activities.” – Natalie Damon
