Pic of the day: Why the long face?

Longsnout pipefish have straight, segmented bodies, a dorsal fin down the back and a delicate fanned tail. The name is derived from the peculiar form of their snout, which is like a long tube, ending in a narrow and small mouth which opens upwards and is toothless – hence the name.

Similarly to seahorses, male pipefish give birth to babies after carrying their embryos in pouches in their bellies.

Come and see these fascinating creatures, and many more, at the Two Oceans Aquarium!
