The Western leopard toad is only found in the Western Province of South Africa. It has a beautiful pattern of chocolate to reddish-brown patches with a bright yellow or black edging, on a pink or grey background. There is usually a yellow stripe running the length of the back between the patches.
For one week of the year, usually in August, Western leopard toads head for a suitable pond to mate. Unfortunately, this is when many end up underneath the tyre of a car, since roads and highways now cross their natural migration paths. They are now an endangered species, but with increased awareness about the habits, and an active volunteer base, there’s hope that the situation does not deteriorate.
Come and see the Western leopard toad at the Frogs: Beyond the Pond exhibit at the Two Oceans Aquarium and find out what you can do to help the Western leopard toad.
And don’t forget that this Saturday is Save A Frog Day – we’ll be handing out Frogs Beyond the Pond activity books for free to all children on the day. Catch the frog puppet show and enjoy some ribbiting arts and crafts activities at the AfriSam Children’s Play Centre.
We are also giving away two sets of Frogs Beyond the Pond activity books and frog identification books via our website. Click here to enter.
