Pic of the day: Dancing anemones

What an electrifying image of a few of the anemones in our care.

These anemones may look delicate, but they pack a poisonous punch.

Anemones may look like delicate flowers, but they pack a poisonous punch. The barbs in their tentacles fire poison on contact, which is injected into their prey.

Of course they need to protect themselves from the poison, too. To do this, they secrete a special slime that prevents one tentacle’s stinging cells from firing off poison when they make contact with other tentacles or their body.
