Pic of the day: African black oystercatcher

There are 12 known species of oystercatcher birds and depending on the species the bird can be black to black-brown, or black and white. They are found on South African and Namibian coastlines.

Did you know that the oystercatcher rarely eats oysters? Their strong orange beaks help them to feed on mussels, worms and a few limpets.

The African black oystercatcher (Haematopus moquini) starts breeding once a year at around three or four years old and partners mate for life.
