Photo essay: a visit to the Two Oceans Aquarium

Tara Turkington

Did you know that a startled hagfish can produce seven litres of slime in a few minutes? Or that clown triggerfish make grunting noises generated by vibrations in their bladders? Or that in 1910 there were about 1.5-million African penguins in the wild, but now there are fewer than 60 000, that they occur only in South Africa and Namibia and in the next 15 years they could well become extinct?

You’ll learn these and loads of other fun and fascinating facts on a trip to the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town. Spend a few hours and lose yourself in the wonders of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans that border South Africa. You’ll marvel at the multiple life forms beneath the waves, and you’ll emerge more mindful of our environment and our place in it. (If not, the Two Oceans Aquarium staff might just set a hagfish on you ...)
