World-famous folk musician Peter Sarstedt is set to wow fans and help save Cape Town’s Cape fur seals in the V&A Waterfront by giving an exclusive September performance at the Aquarium.

We are thrilled to announce the Aquarium’s hosting of this very special concert on 30 September. Sarstedt, who rose to fame in 1969 with his massive hit single, “Where do you go to my lovely”, will perform his inspiring, laidback and melodic compositions for an intimate audience of 120.

Tickets are already available on our website, but seating is limited so don’t miss out! The cost is R180 per person, which includes a light meal. A cash bar will be available.

Sarstedt is travelling through South Africa as a guest of our partner Sappi, and he’s helping to raise funds and awareness for various environmental conservation organisations endorsed by Sappi. Sarstedt is known to be passionate about the environment and has recorded a complete A-Z “green alphabet” – listen to it here.

This particular concert, at 19h00 on 30 September, is in aid of the Aquarium’s Cape fur seal project. Many of the seals that frequent the waters around the V&A Waterfront have straps or nooses cutting into their flesh, or scars from previous injuries.

Being playful, inquisitive animals, seals sadly fall victim to harbour pollution by swimming into the nooses. Over time the noose tightens and cuts into the flesh, causing wounds that, unless treated, could ultimately lead to death. The sight of these injured seals is a cause of great concern and distress to members of the public.

Aquarium staff members Claire Taylor (assistant curator) and Vincent Calder (assistant technical manager) work closely with Mike Meyer of Marine and Coastal Management (MCM) to remove nooses from the seals and tag the animals.

Depending on the extent of the injury, it is sometimes necessary to restrain the seals to treat them. Meyer, Taylor and Calder have long envisaged a platform directly outside the Aquarium, which would enable them to “gate” an injured seal to quickly and effectively tend to the animal’s injuries.

“We are thrilled that Sappi, one of our founder partners, has agreed to assist us with yet another conservation initiative,” said Two Oceans Aquarium Communications and Sustainability Manager Helen Lockhart.

“We are grateful to Sappi for its support and for sharing in our vision to ‘foster love, respect and understanding of our oceans to inspire support for their future well-being’.”

The concert on 30 September is bound to be nostalgic, inspirational and utterly enjoyable – bring your friends, your parents and grandparents and help us, Sappi and Sarstedt to help our seals.

Buy your ticket now. Alternatively, visit the Aquarium’s ticket office between 09h30 and 17h00 daily.
