Penguin Encounter: We have our March winner

Two Oceans Aquarium

Congratulations to Rachel Mbhele, who has won a Penguin Encounter by getting through our rather tricky African penguin quiz. Rachel was one of only 14 entrants who got all questions right!

Here are the correct answers to our quiz:

  1. The African penguin is endemic and endangered.
  2. Its scientific name is Spheniscus demersus.
  3. Factors that contribute to the decline of African penguin populations exclude Justin Bieber.
  4. It takes between 38 and 42 days for an African penguin egg to hatch.
  5. The African penguin’s distinctive black and white colouring is helpful because it provides camouflage: white for underwater predators looking upwards and black for predators looking down onto the dark water.
  6. Waddle for a Week is a walking tour of the South Coast to raise awareness of the plight of the African penguin.
  7. The Two Oceans Aquarium’s African penguin ambassadors are called Zuki and Ayoba.
  8. You can visit an African penguin breeding colony at Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town.
  9. Penguins can’t fly.
  10. According to SANCCOB, 2 600 African penguin breeding pairs currently live at Algoa Bay in Port Elizabeth.

Watch this space for April’s competition – launching tomorrow!
