It’s time for another, always-sold-out, members’ sleepover at the Two Oceans Aquarium. This time we will be celebrating Earth Hour.

Earth Hour

On Saturday 19 March cities around the world will participate in Earth Hour. This annual event asks all citizens of Planet Earth to switch off their lights (and as many energy-dependent appliances as possible) for an hour between 20h30 and 21h30.

By becoming more aware of our energy consumption and the harmful carbon dioxide emissions that result from burning fossil fuels such as coal and oil, we can take steps towards more sustainable and low-carbon choices, which include renewable energy sources like the sun.

The Two Oceans Aquarium is a certified Platinum member of the Heritage Environmental Rating Programme, an internationally recognised eco-labelling programme. Platinum status is the highest level of achievement in this programme.

As such we strive to lead by example and actively seek ways to reduce our impact on the environment through various initiatives. One such initiative is the new Smart Living Challenge Zone, which we developed in collaboration with the City of Cape Town and launched in December 2015.

Representatives from the City of Cape Town will visit the Smart Living Challenge Zone on 19 March before they announce their new “game-changing energy plan” at the V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre. Due to this special visit, our sleepover programme will be slightly different from the usual plan as we will spend the first part of the evening outside of the main Aquarium.

The activities for the evening will be as follows:

Bring along your picnic supper to enjoy in Shoreline Café while we keep the kids entertained. Children can have their faces painted before watching the puppet show. We'll also run a decoupage lantern-making workshop, so bring glass jars!

We will count down to Earth Hour at 20h30 and then enjoy hot chocolate, marshmallows and further entertainment.

After that it’s off to bed and when the sunlight starts to trickle through the water, we will rise and shine to meet the new day ... with a yummy breakfast that will be waiting at Shoreline Café.
