Dads, spoil yourself with a visit to the Two Oceans Aquarium this Father's Day. It's a fin-tastic place to take the whole family – think of all the fish puns you'll be able to make! You're guaranteed to have a whale of time.
Fatherhood is different across the animal kingdom. Here are some interesting facts about animal dads:
- In the middle of the freezing Antarctic winter, male emperor penguins shelter their eggs between their feet and a special pouch to keep it warm while the mother goes on the hunt for food ... for weeks on end!
- Male suckerfish use their specially adapted pelvic fin to latch on to a surface near to their fertilised eggs, and fiercly guard them from predators until they hatch
- In some frog and toad species, the males look after the tadpoles by keeping them safe in their mouths, going without food until they mature. In other species, the spawn are embedded in the skin
- Seahorses fertilise their eggs inside the male's special brooding pouch, and it is also the male seahorse that gives birth to the offspring – up to 200 babies at a time!
- In some animals, it is much less straightforward. Clownfish actually change sex from male to female, in order to increase reproductive output. Jellyfish are able to reproduce asexually
Come and learn more about the wonders of the ocean during your visit. Our Aquarium mascots will also be walking around handing out biltong (halaal-friendly) to all the dads who visit us on the day.
Kids can stop by at the AfriSam Children's Play Centre and join in the arts and crafts activities on the day. We'll be making special ceramic cups that are perfect Father's Day gifts!
