Love is in the water

Time waits for no man (or woman!) and with the festive season behind us, the 2013 celebration of Valentine’s Day is just around the corner.

This year, the Two Oceans Aquarium won’t be hosting its wonderfully famous Valentine’s dinner, but the beach and the ocean can still provide you with inspirational ideas on how to celebrate this romantic day.

The classic walk and picnic on the beach remains ever popular. The trick, however, is to get your timing just right. What is more romantic than watching the golden sun melting slowly into the ocean, while enjoying a leisurely dinner?

Just remember that Cape Town’s beaches are alcohol-free zones. You definitely don’t want to suffer the humiliation of being reprimanded by a policeman while on your romantic date!

Those “unattached” can still celebrate and have fun at the beach. Valentine’s Day is the perfect day to organise a singles-mingle: get some single friends together and meet at the beach for a game of volleyball or beach tennis. Ask everyone to bring a snack and once the sun has set, put together a feast for everyone to enjoy. Share the fun!

What would Valentine’s Day be without the romantic gifts? This year, why not give that box of chocolates a wide berth and give a gift with extra-special meaning? At www.sanccob.co.za, you can adopt a penguin on behalf of your loved one. Visit the shop link on the site and follow the prompts. You can even name the penguin you adopt!

Years of guano collecting have depleted the African penguin’s nest-building habitat. Visit www.dict.org.za to sponsor a specially designed and built artificial penguin house. These houses are being placed in African penguin colonies to provide the birds with adequate nesting. Follow the donate link on the site and give a lucky penguin couple a house they can call home.

Other great ocean-inspired gifts and activity ideas include sharing in learning the art of free- or scuba diving, a year’s membership to the Aquarium, and surfing or exploring the rock pools together. Remember to always be safe, respectful of your environment and to enjoy!

“Our memories of the ocean will linger on, long after our footprints in the sand are gone.”—Anonymous

So, on Valentine’s Day 2013, make sure that you take inspiration from the sea when it comes to declaring your love for your paramour.
