These spider-like critters are the largest crustaceans in the world and males can grow to approximately one metre in length. Unfortunately, very little is known about the biology of giant spider crabs and it is virtually impossible to determine their age. However, they are thought to live up to 100 years old.
They live on the ocean floor at depths of around 400m, where they find all their tasty meals, including algae, molluscs, shellfish and small fish.
And thanks to its not-so-cuddly look, the giant spider crab is a perfect addition to our aSCAREium evening!
Spider crab facts:
- Giant spider crabs have a leg-span of around four metres
- Giant spider crabs live in temperatures between 11ºC and 14ºC
- To grow, the crabs must shed their hard exoskeleton by moulting, which can take up to two days
- Each moult is a potentially life-threatening process, as the crab can become entrapped in its old shell. The crab can also die soon after, due to sheer exhaustion
- The new, still-soft exoskeleton makes the crab vulnerable to predation
Just as the spider crab sheds its skin, so you too can come out of your proverbial shell by dressing up as one of our weird and wonderful creatures – like the hagfish, devil firefish, moray eel or spider crab – or a sea king, mermaid, superhero, zombie or ghost. You decide what creature to tap into, then slink, swim or simply walk over to the Two Oceans Aquarium and enjoy an evening of unbridled fun and laughter.
From 19h00 until 22h00 you and your little ones can share beautiful, memorable moments of discovery, exploration and intrigue as you learn about the fascinating, unique and truly captivating creatures that make the Aquarium their home. In between, you can take part in a number of arts and crafts, face-painting, magic shows and loads of games.
Why not take advantage of aSCAREium to spend some quality and, more importantly, fun time with your family and friends? And one of the best parts of the evening … you won’t have to clean up afterwards.
