Learning for a sustainable future – Smart Living for Grade 7s

Katja Rockstroh

Our planet is in trouble and needs saving – especially if our children are to have a healthy planet to live on in the future.

The Smart Living course, sponsored by the City of Cape Town, covers four main topics: waste, water, biodiversity and energy. All of these four pillars highlight the need for us to start changing our ways, and thinking and acting towards a more sustainable future.

Topics covered, among many, will include:

  • What is biodiversity?
  • Where does our waste go?
  • Where does our energy come from?
  • How can we conserve water?

If adults are not prepared to change their way of thinking, then hopefully young people will. We are looking for 50 Grade 7s who are passionate about the environment and want to play an active role in improving it.

The course will run over five days, with the last two days comprising a camp at Zeekoeivlei. Please note that this course is not directly marine related, but will have marine content within each theme to bring the message across.

Dates: 31 January, 7, 14, 21 and 22 February (the camp takes place on 21 and 22 February)

Since the course is fully sponsored, it is offered at no cost to the participants. Please contact Katja Rockstroh on education@aquarium.co.za for application forms. Application deadline is 16 January 2015.
