It was with great pleasure that we invited stakeholders, partners, friends and family to the launch celebration of the I&J Ocean Exhibit on Wednesday 17 August 2016.

While the exhibit has been open to the public since 16 June, we chose this night in August to officially introduce the turtles, guitar fish, tuna and bonito, musselcracker and grunter, rays and kob, to esteemed members of the media, stakeholders and sponsors.

The exhibit is named the I&J Ocean Exhibit in recognition of I&J’s long-standing commitment to the Two Oceans Aquarium. As a founder partner, I&J has a long history with us. The fishing company was the driver in attaining the stringent sustainability Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for the industry in 2004, and has played a key partnership role with the Aquarium since its opening in 1995.

New game: the I&J Marine Heroes Adventure

Together with I&J we also launched the I&J Marine Heroes Adventure on Wednesday night, a fun touch-screen gaming experience created by Formula D, who are also the tech-entertainment fundi behind our Smart Living Challenge Zone, which was created in partnership with the City of Cape Town.

“The I&J Marine Heroes Adventure is a digital, multi-player game we have designed, in partnership with the Two Ocean Aquarium, as an exciting educational and learning activity  to engage, educate and inform the young Aquarium visitors on sustainability and to empower them to make the right choices in life. The game consists of fun and quick gameplay tasks, each of which conveys a key message on the best practices in responsible fishing and consumption. Through the gameplay, users learn how the right choices can positively influence the marine environment,” said I&J Marketing Manager Nicoletta Mattioli.

Formula D’s brief was to create a game that would make the concepts of sustainable fishing and responsible purchasing decisions understandable for the younger market (kids from about 7 years old). The I&J Marine Heroes Adventure game demonstrates ideas of quotas, ring fencing and how deep water hake fishing has evolved to be more sustainable, with I&J being one of the leaders in this arena.

“We were very excited and honoured to have been chosen to produce this educational game exhibit for the Aquarium by I&J. It was amazing to see it in its home and even better to see how people reacted so positively to it. It ran a queue! That’s a sure sign of a successful exhibit,” said Formula D Managing Director Marco Rosa.

The game has indeed proven very popular with kids … and volunteers ... and adults ... and staff members.
