The Two Oceans Aquarium Environmental Education Centre is at the forefront of marine education in Cape Town. We’ve hosted more than 147 432 learners from around South Africa in the last three years alone. We offer educational programmes to school groups that complement the work done in schools, wildly popular educational sleepovers, annual Junior and Young Biologist Courses as well as a Grade 12 Winter School.
From time to time, we introduce new programmes or once-off special discounts. Here’s a roundup of what’s up at the EEC over the next few months.
New! SeaFans programme for Grades 8 and 9
Many of the Two Oceans Aquarium Environmental Education Centre supporters have asked what we are offering for Grade 8 and 9 learners as a result of the success of our Young Biologist Course and Matric revision programmes for senior learners. Programmes aimed at this younger age group are clearly in demand. It is our pleasure to announce the launch of SeaFans, a programme aimed at Grade 8 and 9 students, happening from 9 to 13 July 2012.
The purpose of this course is to:
- provide important basic environmental, zoological and biological knowledge;
- supplement and support school curriculum material; and
- provide enrichment for students interested in marine life.
Back to School discounts
Our Environmental Education Centre is once again offering a back-to-school discount for teachers and educators to “sea in” the second half of 2012. Book a group of 60 or more children between 16 and 31 July and pay just R30 per learner!
This is a great opportunity for teachers to get students back into a learning environment and to introduce a marine theme to their mathematics, natural sciences, life science and literacy programmes.
This offer is limited to 16 to 31 July only!
To book, please contact Carrin Blake on +27 (0)21 418 3823 or email schools@aquarium.co.za.
Making maths fun
With the introduction of the new CAPS curriculum, we are keen to incorporate the important elements of Mathematics, Literacy and Science into our lesson plans.
Our new maths lesson includes skills such as measuring, data collection and tally sheets, and provides a means to discuss dwindling fish stocks and sustainable harvesting.
If you would like to get a new angle on teaching maths to your learners, please call Carrin Blake on +27 (0)21 418 3823 or email her on schools@aquarium.co.za.
New puppet show for pre-schoolers
Join Rocky the rockhopper penguin on his journey in unfamiliar Cape Town waters. Meet a shark, Loppy the rock lobster and Hopper the African penguin, as they help Rocky find a new home.
Rocky in New Waters is a great puppet show teaching children about the different penguin species found at the Aquarium, as well as how the rockhopper penguins arrived on our shores.
Our puppet shows take place daily at 10h30, 13h30 and 16h00. If you would like to book a puppetshow, please call Carrin Blake on +27 (0)21 418 3823 or email her on schools@aquarium.co.za.
2012 IAC Youth Symposium
The Two Oceans Aquarium is hosting the 2012 International Aquarium Congress (IAC) in September 2012. For the opening day we are inviting 500 high school, university and college students to join the proceedings.
Alongside the IAC, the Two Oceans Aquarium is also hosting a Youth Symposium and we would like to invite learners to register for three events that are being presented.
1. The Two Oceans Aquarium Youth Symposium: Sunday, 29 July 2012
2. The Voices of the Future of the Oceans Video Conference: Friday, 7 to Saturday 8 September 2012
3. The opening day of the IAC: Monday, 10 September 2012 (group bookings only)
The aim of the IAC is to expose the audience to the role that aquariums play in the conservation of our oceans, and to involve them in discussions on some of the key issues regarding education programmes within these facilities.
