Introducing the Two Oceans Aquarium Young Biologist Green Team

Thaakirah Saamai

Hey! Hi! Hello! We’re the Two Oceans Aquarium Young Biologist Green Team and we’d like to introduce ourselves to you.

We are a group of student volunteers at the Two Oceans Aquarium who are passionate about conserving, preserving and teaching others how to respect our coastline.

Our amazing group was started by Nikki Cathcart, who asked me if I would like to assist. I immediately agreed.

We originally started thinking about starting this group at the beginning of 2013 but due to Nikki’s study commitments and my matric year we found ourselves drowning under all the pressure (excuse the pun).

So now it’s 2014 and here we are, ready and willing.

Our group is run in conjunction with an amazing committee made up of eight other young biologists: Matthew Orolowitz, Brandon van Niekerk, Megan-Rose Francis, Matthew Courtney, Frans-Loius Nel, Casha De Vos, Emma Suckley and Stephanie Jacobs.

Having just started out this year, we initially became involved with Thrive, a Hout Bay-based organisation doing fantastic work for our environment.

We are even more excited to be hosting an event of our own, the 25 000 Bag Campaign. This campaign is a challenge to Young Biologists and to members of the public to host a clean-up in your coastal area to help us reach our goal of collecting 25 000 bags of rubbish in one year. The campaign starts on 1 August 2014 and runs until 31 July 2015, and our very first event will be a beach clean-up in Muizenberg. Please join us! Details below.

Beach Clean-up
