Introducing Biomimikids: Introducing our children to the future of science

Two Oceans Aquarium

The company biomimicrySA is launching a Biomimikids programme to introduce the wonderful world of biomimicry to kids and teenagers between the ages of 10 and 18 years. The Two Oceans Aquarium is collaborating with biomimicrySA for this bold new venture and we’re launching it with a one-day introductory workshop on 22 October.

Biomimicry is defined as “the design and production of materials, structures, and systems that are modelled on biological entities and processes”. It is fast gaining ground among the world’s leading scientists as the discipline that could solve most of our pressing problems in the most effective, environmentally friendly ways – by taking inspiration from Mother Nature herself.

We’ve hosted biomimicry workshops before – but this time, we’re focusing on children and teenagers.

Details

Date: Saturday 22 October at the Two Oceans Aquarium
Time: 09h00 to 15h00
Cost: R200 per child, includes lunch
Family discounts are available.
Please note: Bring drawing pencils and a notebook.

Leading South African biomimicry professional Claire Janisch will lead this introductory workshop together with the Two Oceans Aquarium Environmental Education Centre’s senior educator, Xavier Zylstra.

Kids will be introduced to the genius of nature, what we can learn from nature, and be inspired by biomimicry examples. There’ll also be mini-design challenges that are age-appropriate.

Best of all, we’ll take the kids on a biomimicry tour of the Two Oceans Aquarium, where they’ll get to see nature at work first hand, and get to interact with the plants and animals in a whole new way.
