Photo essay: I want to be ... under the sea

You can take the kids to the Aquarium over and over again – they never tire of it. The world-class exhibits are designed to appeal to everyone: Small children are enchanted by the visual wonders and dedicated children’s exhibits, while play areas also have spots where adults can sit down to supervise their youngsters. Interactive displays with information that is easy to understand, as well as creative activities, will absorb everyone’s attention until it’s time to go.

The AfriSam Children’s Play Centre will keep children entertained with colourful puppet shows, where they’ll make friends with penguins, octopuses, sharks, eels and turtles. Fishy arts ‘n crafts that kids get to keep is a great creative way for them to interpret the wonders for themselves. Adults appreciate the chance to grab refreshments from the tuck shop, sit comfortably and relax.

Jungle gym fun is sometimes all the play toddlers need … and the Aquarium’s family oriented approach ensures they are accommodated.

The Aquarium’s own enchanted forest never fails to delight children, who are awed by the scale and magnitude of the giant kelp. The Two Oceans Aquarium is one of only three aquariums in the world which feature kelp forest displays. Watch the play of light on the multihued kelp as it waves in the current, and the striking fish which swim through. This is one of our best-loved exhibits and mesmerises children and adults alike.

The Microscope display aims to bring the finer details of the Oceans of Contrast: Atlantic Ocean Gallery into focus. It’s a fascinating feature in its own right, especially for children who have never looked through a powerful microscope before.

The Touch Pool brings the oceans to your fingertips, providing children with a tactile – and more immediate – learning experience.
