Did you know? Some Two Oceans Aquarium staff and volunteers have been here since 1995 - the year we opened. On 11 November we honoured those who have worked or volunteered here for 20, 15, 10 and 5 years. Our CEO Dr Patrick Garratt handed out awards to the qualifying staff members and volunteers.

Thanks to dedication like this, we're able to swim into our 21st year.

Honouring 20 years

“I have been able to do what I am interested in and love. Its not just a job, its who I am. My favourite part of working here is being surrounded by beautiful and fascinating animals and fun, passionate and inspiring people. Since I first started working here, I’ve come home to myself and my true calling - which is to work on behalf of, in support of, and connected to Nature. ” – Helen Lockhart, Communications & Sustainability Manager

“I love being dedicated to, passionate about and loyal to my work. I love the interactions I have each day, meeting people from all walks of life. I also love all the staff members who help to make my day inspiring and fulfilling. A special thank you to all.” – Audrey Hendricks, Ticket Office Supervisor

Terri-Ann Burns, Volunteer

Honouring 15 years

Russell Stevens, Head of Education

“What's kept me here for so long are the people and the ethics. What I love most about the Aquarium is the organised chaos! And what’s changed since I first started here 15 years ago? I’ve gotten older and more experienced.” – Claire Taylor, Assistant Curator

Honouring 10 years

“When I joined the Aquarium 10 years ago, I thought it would be a stepping stone to something else ... Famous last words! The Aquarium becomes part of you, and in return we become family.” – Alichia Nortje, Marketing Manager

“This is be best place to interact with people from all over the world, every day. Knowing that I can add value to their day (and I do as much as I can), is what has made all my years here worth spending!” – Msa Maseko, Floor Manager

Mymoon Kariem, Technician

“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time but they have the heart. I really believe if you have the passion and commitment and you love what you are doing, you’ll remain a volunteer for years to come. This is definitely true in my case! So the answer to the question: “Why have you stayed a volunteer for so long?” is that I simply love volunteering!” – Nabewieyah Ismail, Volunteer

Honouring 5 years

“Volunteering at the Aquarium allows me to add a bit more of the ocean to my everyday life, and to share it with others.” – Clare Lindeque, Volunteer

“My favourite part of volunteering is that no two shifts are ever the same but the focus is consistent: the animals’ needs are primary and all else follows on from there. I have learnt so much about the oceans, the environment and sustainability and I continue to learn new things each time I am there - I think that’s the reason I am still volunteering.” – Karin Palmer, Volunteer
