Holiday programmes for high school students

Katja Rockstroh

Our Environmental Education Centre will be offering three courses for high school students during the June/July holidays.

ESKOM Matric Life Science Revision Course

24-28 June 2013

The course is provided at no cost to pupils, on condition that they can organise their own transport to the Aquarium each day for the week of the course. Pupils also need to organise their own meals and refreshments during the break times.

We will do a full overview of all the work covered during the matric year, spending more time on difficult concepts, and providing as much time as possible for questions from the floor. Pupils will leave the course with notes on all the work covered (essentially, a study guide for the year), the curriculum document and several past exam papers.

We would like to target motivated pupils who are performing reasonably well, but have the desire/potential to do even better.

Application deadline is 7 June 2013.

Space limited to 50 learners only. Please contact Katja Rockstroh on education@aquarium.co.za for further details on how to apply.

ESKOM Marine Science Course 1-5 July 2013

In our continuous effort to offer new programmes to various grades, we will be launching a new course for Grade 10 and 11 students with a strong interest in marine science.

The purpose of this course is to:

• Provide important basic environmental, zoological and biological content
• Supplement and support school curriculum material
• Provide enrichment for students interested in marine life
• Encourage heightened interest in marine careers

The course is being offered at no charge to 50 Grade 10 and 11 students who show an interest in marine science, and who wish to pursue a career in marine science.

To take part, interested students need to:

• Write a letter of motivation (about 350 to 500 words), asking to participate. In this letter students should illustrate how they have come to be interested in marine-related topics, and how they feel this course will benefit them. They can also express their future career interests and leadership aspirations. Candidates will be selected mainly on the strength of this motivation, so it is imperative to put time and thought into its compilation. A contact e-mail address and phone number for the applicant should be indicated, so that we can contact them directly
• Submit a supporting letter, written by a teacher or the principal

Application deadline is 14 June 2013.

SeaFans Course 8-12 July 2013

Many people who support our range of courses have inquired about what we offer for Grade 8 and 9 students. This follows the success of our Grade 10 and 11 Young Biologist Course, and our Matric Revision Course. Programmes aimed at Grade 8 and 9 students are clearly in demand. It is our pleasure to announce that our SeaFans Programme, aimed at Grade 8 and 9 students, will be back from 8-12 July 2013.

The course is being offered at no charge to 50 Grade 8 and 9 students who show an interest in marine life, and who wish to pursue a career in marine science. These enthusiastic applicants should show an interest in graduating as future Young Biologists at the Two Oceans Aquarium.

A contact e-mail address and phone number for the parent of the applicant should be indicated, so that we can contact them directly.
• Submit a supporting letter, written by a teacher or the principal

Application deadline is 21 June 2013.
