Hit the beach with us on International Coastal Clean-up Day

Have you ever considered what happens to your trash once you have disposed of it?

The sad truth is that much of it ends up in the sea, and along our coastline. These are sensitive natural habitats for a variety of wildlife, and litter that gathers on beaches around the world can do unspeakable damage to the planet’s natural biodiversity.

Every year, volunteers gather to do their part to help the planet. International Coastal Clean-up Day happens on 20 September this year – in 2013 nearly 650 000 volunteers covered some 12 000 miles of coastline, and picked up more than 5 500 metric tons of trash. Here’s what most of it consisted of:

This year, the Two Oceans Aquarium will be heading to Hout Bay for International Coastal Clean-up Day. Anyone who wants to do their part and help out – even if it is just for one day – is more than welcome to come along and muck in.

Details:

  • 20 September 2014, from 10am to 12pm
  • Meeting point: Mariner’s Wharf parking lot
  • We will supply bags, gloves and data sheets
  • Please remember to bring sunscreen, hat and water (in a reusable or recyclable container)

Let us know if you will be joining us in two ways – email us on education@aquarium.co.za or join our event on Facebook (and invite your friends).

Remember, there are little things you can do right now to minimise the amount of rubbish that ends up in our oceans:
