Hidden frog, leaping claws: From the Two Oceans Flickr Group

This leaping wonder is the common platanna or African clawed frog Xenopus laevis which was caught in mid-spring soaring through the air by Ian van Romburgh.

It is a rare occasion to immortalise these long-clawed and powerful-legged jumpers as they are quite shy. The African clawed frog will hibernate throughout most the year, hiding beneath rocks and burrowing under wet mud, only emerging during rainy seasons.

A warning to the ladies: no urinating on these precious frogs! Want to know more? Visit the Frogs: Beyond the Pond exhibit at the Two Oceans Aquarium and catch a glimpse of this fascinating creature.

Been to the Aquarium lately? We’d love to see what you saw! If you have images that you’d like to share with us, join the Two Oceans Aquarium Flickr group and you could see your picture on our blog!
