Each year we invite members at this sleepover to partner with the Aquarium to either spoil an old age home, an orphanage or to sponsor a school group to visit the Aquarium. This year, the staff of the Aquarium decided to support an animal-related need, the animals that are often forgotten during this time of the year, unintentionally!
A request was sent to members joining the sleepover to bring along a tin of cat or dog food. The Aquarium staff then decided which animal shelter/welfare the pet food should be donated to. We had a good amount of food donated on the evening, allowing us to support a worthy recipient.
Fisantekraal Animal Welfare in Durbanville was selected. This welfare group has been operating since 2005, for two days a week. There is no permanent income to support it but with the help and dedication of volunteers, it has been making a difference in the surrounding communities of Fisantekraal township and squatter camps, Morning Star and surrounding farms in the Durbanville area. Whether it’s animal vaccinations, deworming or even just a good wash, these services are offered at no charge.
We delivered the food to the welfare early in February 2014.
Both staff and animals were very grateful as donations like this don’t often happen often enough.
Aquarium members can check out our events calendar for 2014 to see when the next sleepover is. Donations to conservation or sponsorship to allow a disadvantaged school to visit the Aquarium are open to all, and can be done online via our online shop.
