Happy International Day for Biological Diversity!

Renée Leeuwner

What is biological diversity? Well, simply put, it is the big puzzle of life that we are all part of. We are all connected, and we are all connected to nature and the environment around us.

Biodiversity is every single piece that makes up the big puzzle, every single link in the food chain, and every single organism that makes up this incredible place we call home. It is the variety of life that makes life!

Today, zoological institutions and wildlife conservationists around the world will “Show the Wild Face of Climate Change” by connecting climate change effects to animal species through photographs, educational activities and more. The photographs show the many ways that climate change puts biodiversity at risk, and aim to unite the world’s conservation organisations in calling for urgent action on climate change from world leaders.

Our oceans need us to get to 350!

The activity has been organised by Zoos & Aquariums for 350, a climate-change initiative spearheaded by the Conservation Breeding Specialist Group. The initiative is part of a global movement to demand government action on climate change, leading to a return to safe atmospheric carbon levels of 350 parts per million. This is the upper safe limit of carbon in the atmosphere. Beyond that, all species suffer climate change effects.

According to the website, “scientific evidence increasingly shows that climate change will become a primary driver of species extinction in the coming century. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reports that 70-80% of birds, amphibians and corals that are already threatened are also climate change-susceptible.”
