The festive season is a time for giving. This year, we want to encourage you to think “green” by giving a gift that is meaningful, yet not material. Having recently been awarded Platinum status by the Heritage Environmental Management Company, the Aquarium is among the leading environmentally sustainable tourist attractions in South Africa. We love to spread the green message while celebrating with our loved ones and our beloved Mother Nature. Green is our second favourite colour.
Sponsor a disadvantaged child’s visit to the Aquarium
Thousands of children live close to the sea, but many have never had the chance to go to the beach or play in the waves. Many of these children may never experience the joy of seeing underwater through a mask, let alone go scuba diving or travelling to exotic destinations to see animals in the wild.
You can sponsor a disadvantaged child’s visit the Aquarium and give those less fortunate a life-changing day.
Share the Aquarium experience with family and friends
Why not consider buying an Aquarium membership online and give someone special the opportunity to visit as often as they wish?
Or, for a once in a lifetime opportunity, book a Penguin Encounter at our online store and give someone the opportunity to get up close to our rockhopper penguins (these rockies recently became CNN stars).
Our online tickets – discounted – also make great gifts for friends and family who are visiting.
Know any qualified scuba divers? Diving with our ragged-tooth sharks will blown them of the water (or, rather, into it). Scuba diving in our I&J Predator Exhibit is one of those remarkable, memorable experiences – the perfect gift for water lovers.

Tread lightly
Here are some ideas for an eco-friendly festive season.
- Buy local and support community markets where you’ll find locally hand-crafted gifts for everyone.
- Re-use ribbon, gift bags, wrapping paper and cards.
- Send e-cards rather than paper cards.
- Decorate an indigenous tree as your Christmas tree. Once all the decorations have been packed away, plant the tree in your garden or donate it.
- Give indigenous plants as presents.
- Add the personal touch – make or bake presents.
- Prepare your festive meal with local organic produce and toast family and friends with organic wine.
- Include rechargeable batteries for battery operated toys.
- Hang LED Christmas lights as they use 10% less power than conventional strings of lights.
