The Two Oceans Aquarium’s annual graduation ceremony for volunteers took place on 5 June 2010, and it was a spirited soccer affair attended by the who’s who of the Aquarium.

The ceremony was themed around the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ and tables were dressed up to represent nine of the top competing nations – some of which have since taken a bow from the tournament. Soccer nations represented were South Africa, Spain, Mexico, France, Germany, England, Italy, Argentina and Brazil, while attendees were also gussied up in soccer gear, making for a festive football evening.

This very special event, held every year, acknowledged the time and commitment that volunteers have freely given to the Aquarium over the past year. It is an invitation-only affair that’s attended by Aquarium staff, current volunteers and their partners.

Julia Laubscher receives the Doug Turley Award for Rookie Volunteer of the Year from Visitor Services Manager Dr Nathalie Viljoen

This year, 59 Aquarium volunteers graduated from the training course and two special awards were handed out. Volunteer of the Year (which acknowledges a volunteer’s exceptional commitment and work ethic) went to Jenny Labuschagne, and Rookie Volunteer of the Year (which honours a phenomenal contribution over a very short period – less than a year) was awarded to Julia Laubscher.

There were also an award for long service, which went to Suzy Del Fante. For giving 10 years of uninterrupted service and as part of Aquarium tradition, Suzy received a personalised caricature.

For entertainment, the Aquarium kept it proudly South African with Diski dancing lessons from two dancers from Coda. Follow-up entertainment included singing and dancing from Bongue Entertainment.

Needless to say, everyone got in on the action … which also included a vuvuzela-blowing competition! It was a fantastically colourful event with great food and a fabulous atmosphere.

Make sure you’re there next year by finding out how you can become a volunteer at the Aquarium.
