Goodies from Faithful to Nature up for grabs!

It’s competition time at the Two Oceans Aquarium! We’ve partnered with online store Faithful to Nature to offer you an exciting prize: a R500 voucher for each of two lucky winners to spend online at the Faithful to Nature store.

Faithful to Nature specialises in selling only natural and organic products, and offers everything from eco-friendly gadgets to ethical clothing and accessories. As one of the first companies in the world with a strict ingredient policy, it takes the work out of checking the green credentials of the products you buy. Find out more about its story here.

At the Aquarium, we constantly strive to keep our footprint green, and encourage sustainable business practices wherever we can. We also encourage our visitors to go green through a number of initiatives. Join us on September 21 for International Coastal Clean-up Day, on which Aquarium staff, volunteers and our Solemates members will join other volunteers at Strandfontein Beach to pick up litter. Many of the plastic products we use in our day-to-day lives are used for a short time, disposed of and forgotten about – but end up in our oceans and on our beaches, wreaking all kinds of havoc on the local wildlife and the environment.

Get creative! Spread the message and win

Help us spread the message about the damage that plastic bags, drinking straws and other litter cause to the environment by coming up with a catchy slogan, witty poem or clever limerick encouraging people to think twice. It could be in the form of a verse, haiku, limerick, poem, or even just a witty tweet (mention us here). You’ll find some inspiration below. Keep it clean and positive!

The two most inspiring, well-thought-out submissions as selected by Aquarium staff will each win a R500 voucher.

Here are a few facts about waste products to help get the creative juices flowing:

  • Plastic bags do not biodegrade. Light breaks them down into smaller and smaller particles that contaminate the soil and water and are expensive and difficult to remove
  • It takes between 3l and 5l of water to produce 1l of bottled water.
  • Recycling just one aluminium can saves enough energy to light a 100W light bulb for 20 hours!
  • Disposable nappies last for centuries in landfills. An average baby will go through 8 000 of them.
